What is AIDE
AI Delivery and Enablement (AIDE) is a central multidisciplinary function, established under the AI Plan for the Australian Public Service 2025(Opens in a new tab/window) (APS AI Plan) within the Department of Finance. AIDE support the Australian Public Service (APS) to adopt AI in a way that is safe, effective and responsible. AIDE works alongside existing teams to identify steps in our processes that make it harder for the APS to use AI and help to remove those barriers. AIDE adopts a proactive and coordinated approach to AI stewardship and enablement, accelerating the safe and responsible adoption of emerging technologies across the APS so government can adapt as technology evolves and deliver better outcomes for Australians.
AIDE’s role in the APS AI Plan
AIDE works in close partnership with the Australian Public Service Commission(Opens in a new tab/window) (APSC) and the Digital Transformation Agency(Opens in a new tab/window) (DTA) to support the delivery of the APS AI Plan. Each agency plays a complementary role in ensuring the safe, responsible and effective adoption of AI across the APS.
- AIDE is responsible for leading and coordinating delivery of the APS AI Plan, including central AI enablement, whole-of-government coordination, shared platforms such as GovAI, strategic communications, and system-wide monitoring and reporting of AI adoption and outcomes across the APS.
- The APSC is responsible for supporting workforce capability under the APS AI Plan, including building AI skills across the APS, guiding workforce planning and change management, and helping agencies manage the workforce impacts of artificial intelligence in a fair, ethical and transparent way.
- The DTA is responsible for strengthening the technical foundations that support the safe, secure and responsible use of AI across the APS, including oversight of the high-risk AI use cases, contribution to whole‑of‑government architectures, and stewardship of shared digital and sourcing frameworks that enable scalable AI adoption.
By working together, the government can ensure the safe and effective deployment of AI and foster a culture of innovation within government through delivering key platforms, reusable solutions, and comprehensive system-wide monitoring.
AIDE’s background
In collaboration with the DTA and the APSC, Finance led the development of the APS AI Plan, drawing on extensive input and use cases from across the public service.
The Minister for Finance, Senator the Hon Katy Gallagher announced the release of the APS AI Plan(Opens in a new tab/window) on 12 November 2025 and formally committed to creating AIDE as the central enabling function for AI across the APS.
AIDE and GovAI – working together
AIDE and GovAI work collaboratively to implement key aspects of the APS AI Plan. GovAI serves as a secure, centralised technology foundation that supplies agencies with Australian-based infrastructure, a variety of model options, development tools, and a growing library of AI use cases and resources to encourage responsible AI adoption. GovAI is also developing and trialling a general purpose AI tool built specifically for the APS – GovAI Chat.
